How One Decision Sparked a Journey of Self-Mastery Through Forex

A young Black South African woman illuminated by a golden beam of light in a dim room, with a faint Inner Dragon and the Funds&Galore logo behind her, representing the awakening in Discipline Over Desire.

Uh, Discipline Over Desire takes me back not so long ago…

I remember the first time I actually fixed my gaze toward forex with surgical precision.
In that moment, my subconscious and conscious mind erupted.

My subconscious: erupted with a feeling that’s familiar… a feeling I can’t explain.
It was pure, like it was telling me:

“Remember the Grade 10 themed birthday party?
This could be our way to experience that life again.”

My conscious mind:
“Wait, I can be my own boss?
I don’t have to work for someone else or line up in interviews to prove my worth?
Most importantly… I can make an average middle-income salary in a single day?
Oh, where do I sign up?”

Lesson for the New Age Conscious Trader:
One thing I can confidently say is that my desire to make money was far more dominant than my discipline…
But we’ll get to that.

The Temptation of Quick Riches: discipline over desire

How the Promise of Fast Money Opened the Door to Purpose

Late in Grade 11, I discovered forex.

I had a childhood friend who made a lot of money trading… something like R10,000 on the VIX Index in just three days.
That was just hours before I fixed my gaze on forex with real curiosity.

I had heard about it before, but I’d never felt the urge to actually learn what it was and how it worked.

A WhatsApp post at the right time, in the right moment, changed everything.

If it wasn’t for my little sibling showing me that post from her phone, I probably would’ve missed it.
She had mobile data because, unlike me, her school held online classes, so my parents were forced to pay up.

Anyway…

If I didn’t look at that post with curiosity (and a bit of greed), Funds & Galore wouldn’t exist today.
I’d probably be job hunting, or already working for a company somewhere.

Crazy how small decisions can shape the path we take in life.

In that moment, my ego took a back seat.
My shadow… driven by purpose and something far bigger than what I was used to… led me to unconsciously jump into the abyss to see what I was truly capable of achieving.

Lesson for the New Age Conscious Trader:
Always remember this:

Any decision you make about your future… make it with full awareness.

Do your due diligence.
Accept both the lessons and the victories that come with it.

Whether it’s a career, a side hustle, or a calling… you must first define your purpose.
Then build your structure.
And finally, execute with total awareness.

The Philosophy of Funds & Galore: discipline over desire

A Black South African woman standing in a circle of floating symbols—purpose, structure, mindset, discipline—with the Inner Dragon and the Funds&Galore logo behind her, expressing the foundation of Discipline Over Desire.

The principles embedded in the Funds & Galore philosophy… from The Evolution of a Consistent Trader to Mindset Over Markets and now Discipline Over Desire… are all focused on one goal:

To awaken the dragon within the trader.

This is the final chapter in my four-piece manifesto of conscious trading… the awakening of purpose, structure, mindset, and now, discipline.

If this message resonates with you, leave a comment and share it… so it can reach other conscious traders who haven’t yet awakened the dragon within them.

First Meet-Up with My First Mentor: discipline over desire

A determined Black South African woman studying trading notes beside her mentor in a dim, golden-lit room, with the Inner Dragon and Funds&Galore logo subtly blended, illustrating early lessons in Discipline Over Desire.

That’s when I met my first forex mentor… my childhood friend… marking the true beginning of my forex journey and the path toward becoming a consistent trader.

It was around 11:30 a.m. when I got a text from him saying he was at the local supermarket.
That’s where we would meet… the place where he often went to capitalise on the free WiFi to analyse charts and place trades.

A rush of dopamine hit me.
Excitement took over.

Finally… I’d get to learn what this forex thing was all about.

At the time, it was all “foreign” to me.
I just hoped it had nothing to do with math… no geometry, no algebra… nothing that could remind me of school numbers.

I was with my cousin, Grade.
Without second-guessing, I looked at him and said:

“Bro, the time has come. The master has summoned us.”

Without hesitation… excited and ready… we marched to the battlefield to conquer forex trading… whatever that meant.

Lessons I Learned from My First Mentor

When we got there, I introduced the two: my childhood friend and Grade.
They dabbed each other up and we sat down.

I started asking questions right away.

“What is forex?”

He replied, “It’s a marketplace where you buy and sell currencies.”

Still confused, I asked:

“What exactly do you buy and sell?”

He explained, “If you buy the Euro, you’re betting against the U.S. dollar.
If you’re right, you make a profit.
If you’re wrong, you lose your capital.”

As we sat there trying to process everything, I realised something… the more I asked, the more questions I had.

Then he pulled out something that immediately caught my attention… his trading journal.

The pages were filled with notes, setups, and reflections.
You could tell he took this seriously.

That was the first time I saw trading as more than just charts and money.

Then he sent me the forex bible (if you know, you know) and more PDF books to read.

He told us to read until page 80, then we’d set up another meeting.

And off we went.

The Second Meet-Up: discipline over desire

Discipline Builds Structure, Structure Builds Results

Here came another obstacle I had to face… reading.

Oh, how I hated reading.

Here we go again… old me vs. new me.

And without hesitation, the more I started reading, the more I understood forex and its basic lingo.

I was, without realising it, choosing discipline over desire.

If reading was the only way, then it was the only way.

In about three days, I finished reading up to page 80 and messaged my mentor to tell him I was done.

He was surprised at the speed.
What can I say… I was hungry for knowledge, but most importantly, I desired the lifestyle.

Second Lesson Learned from My Mentor: discipline over desire

After that meeting, we took a walk where he broke down what a broker is and how it works.

Unfortunately, that was the last time we met for lessons, as he became very busy.

But that didn’t stop me.

I started networking, and that’s when I reconnected with my bro Ethan… who to this day has been nothing but a blessing in disguise.
A very good friend of mine.

He’s four years younger than me, but wise beyond his age.
He has his own YouTube entertainment vlog… go check it out and let him know you came from here.

Let’s continue…

Ethan plugged me with another guy from his class… one of my youngins from when I was still in private school.

I decided to check him out, and oh boy… homie was making my dad’s salary in a single day.

From what I observed, he was risking R5,000 to make between R12,000 and R40,000… sometimes even close to R100,000.

That’s when it hit me:

Discipline creates structure… and structure gives birth to results.

I realised that to truly master this game, I had to treat trading not as a shortcut to wealth, but as a craft that requires consistency, patience, and clarity.

Conclusion: discipline over desire (Part 1)

Looking back, Discipline Over Desire isn’t just a title… it’s a transformation.

Desire may have sparked the flame, but discipline kept it burning through the long nights, the losses, the doubt, and the silence.

To every conscious trader reading this:

You will face your own version of temptation… the fast lane, the get-rich buzz, the dopamine hits.

But the moment you choose discipline, you begin to separate yourself from the noise.
That’s when the dragon within truly awakens.

This is Part 1 of Discipline Over Desire… the beginning of how I learned to balance hunger with patience, desire with awareness.

In Part 2, I’ll take you deeper into my journey… from chasing profits to finally understanding what it means to trade with consistency.
